STAR Exemtions Form Update

The State's Department of Taxation and Finance now require that separate forms must be filed by property owners seeking STAR, enhanced STAR, and low income senior STAR exemptions.  Fortunately, it appears that property owners in these categories must only file the STAR/enhancer STAR forms (including the enrollment form for annual income verification) once.  However, low income seniors who don't file tax returns will be subject to some additional bureaucratic filing requirement(s) that would require direct online filing with the State.

The County Assessment Office has been contacting our low income seniors and inviting them to contact the local office so that the County assessment staff can handle this process for them, and they can avoid dealing with the State's online bureaucracy.  If you know of any seniors who fall in this category, please assure them that this is a legitimate local government initiative, not a scam, and encourage them to visit the County Assessment Office to get their STAR eligibility squared away.

If you or any of your constituents have any questions, they should contact the County Assessment Office directly at 274-5517.
